Most of us are immersed in the narrative of modern news cycles, which steers us toward uncertainty, fear, and hopelessness. The constant drumbeat of a failing world order, economic scarcity, and environmental decay paints a bleak picture of our past, present, and future. That narrative ignores God.
God is speaking. We need to listen to what he is saying.
He who was seated on the throne said,
“I am making everything new!”
Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
(Revelation 21:5)
This little verse, straddling the threshold of future history—those so-called End Times—reminds us by the written affirmation of the Universal King, that ever since the launch of recorded history, what we call the past, He has been and is making things new. “In the beginning God created…”
After an unspecified period, perhaps multiple millennia, of chaotic cosmic darkness, the Creator announces, “Let there be light,” and He makes something NEW…what He identifies as “day” in contrast to “night,” all new.
There, we referenced only the first five verses of the over 31,000 verses in the Bible. And throughout the entirety of sacred history – both Old and New Testaments – we are continuously confronted with the evidence of the King’s declaration, “I am making everything new!”
For instance, on the first page of the Bible – Genesis 1 – we discover several NEW things over and above the day and night already noted. Dry ground and sea. Seed-bearing plants and fruitful trees. Lights in the sky. Sea-creatures and birds. Livestock, reptiles, and wild animals. Everything new! As if that was insufficient,
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…”
Talk about creative variety! He created humanity… humankind like us.
Turn the page, and in Genesis 2, we find the Almighty again doing something radically NEW. He entrusts the human male creature with extraordinary privileges and responsibilities: tending the garden as well as naming the livestock, the birds of the air, and all the beasts of the field. (vs. 15, 20). Not finding a suitable helper for the man among the brute creatures, the Creator does something else NEW: He creates a female human companion for him.
Alas, the couple is faced with a NEW challenge: trust their Creator or believe the tempter. Failing the test, they open the door for another NEW God thing – the good news promise of a devil-defeating Savior! Let’s hear Him again, “I am making everything new!”
Sacred history is replete with God’s NEW creatures: Abraham and Isaac; Joseph in Egypt; Moses and Israel’s Exodus; Kings David and Solomon; as well as many priests and prophets. Everything NEW. What shall we say then of the Messiah’s arrival? Jesus born of a virgin. His baptism. His miracles. His life-imparting words. His painful crucifixion, death, and glorious resurrection. His ascension. EVERYTHING NEW, NEW, NEW!
You see, any time we stand facing a new experience, be it a planned adventure or an unforeseen adversity, we flip God’s Book to the end of the story and are reminded by Him who is seated on the throne, “I AM MAKING (present continuous tense) EVERYTHING NEW!”
The infinite Sovereign, existing forever in an everlasting NOW, reveals Himself to us as the one and only endless Resource of fresh “creations” and “re-creations.” There are no boundaries nor limits to His provision in the NEW Creation. There is Regeneration—new birth and eternal life. Redemption—release from old bondages. Reconciliation—we are forever with Him. Plus, for every failure and fall, there is Restoration and new beginnings. Everything New!
We do well then to hear Him call out (Isaiah 43:18-19),
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past,
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up,
Do you not perceive it?”
May we enter a new year with hope and joy, listening with ears open and hearts obedient.
